On Saturday, Oct. 15, Ottawa’s skateboard community celebrated the grand opening of Berrigan Skatepark in Barrhaven.

The official ribbon cutting took place with the support of Mayor Jim Watson accompanied by Barrhaven Coun. Jan Harder and local skater Adam ‘Polski’ Wawrzynczak. MP Chandra Arya was also in attendance as well as organizers of Girls+ Skate 613 and dozens of stoked local skaters. The ribbon cutting was followed by a skate sesh, with music and a free hot dog BBQ courtesy of Coun. Jan Harder’s office.

We would like to thank Jan Harder for responding to the recreational needs brought forward by her community and involving them in the process of designing this park with Newline Skateparks. Shout outs are also in order for Adam Wawrzynczak, who took initiative as a teenager and got the ball rolling on communicating the need for a skate park in the Barrhaven area nearly a decade ago!

Ottawa has recently acquired three new concrete skateparks: Richcraft in Kanata, Charlie Bowins in Centretown and now Berrigan in Barrhaven.
